Using a range of case studies from human rights to fracking and climate action, pupils consider how they can take responsible action to tackle some of the challenges currently facing society.

What can we do about global problems?

the long-term changes in the Earth's weather patterns and temperatures, often caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation and pollution

the gradual increase in Earth's average temperature; caused by human activities that release gases, such as carbon dioxide, that trap heat in the atmosphere

energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas that release harmful gases into the atmosphere

the cutting down or clearing of trees and forests, usually for farming, logging or development

a method of drilling into the Earth to extract oil and natural gas by injecting high-pressure fluids to crack rocks and release the resources trapped inside

energy that comes from natural sources like the Sun, wind and water, which are constantly replenished and won't run out

basic rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to

an international organisation comprising of most countries in the world which aims to promote peace, security and international cooperation

a non-profit, voluntary group of citizens who work on a local, national or international level to achieve an aim; they are not controlled by the Government, but will often work closely with them

when someone doesn’t have enough money or resources to meet their most basic needs, such as food, shelter and clean water

when someone’s income is much lower than the average in their society (typically 50-60% less), meaning they struggle to afford the same standard of living as most people around them

a person who actively takes responsibility, becomes involved in areas of public concern and tries to make a positive difference in their community

doing something to to bring about change that does not harm others or cause damage

someone who wants to change the world and, by gathering knowledge, skills and resources brings about change through their deliberate actions
