This unit takes pupils on a journey of discovery about techniques used by cybercriminals to steal data, disrupt systems and infiltrate networks. They will consider the value of data to organisations and what it is used for. They will look at social engineering techniques and common cybercrimes.

Introduction to cybersecurity

techniques used to trick users into giving away personal information by manipulating their behaviour or emotions

a method of collecting personal data by asking questions under the guise of generating a fun name

a scam conducted by sending fraudulent emails disguised as communication from reputable companies that ask the receiver to reveal personal information

creating a story to trick someone into giving away their information or money

accessing a computer system without permission

Distributed Denial of Service, an attack used to disrupt communication

accessing a protected resource by repeatedly attempting to guess the key to how it is protected

malicious software - a program designed to cause damage to computer systems, corrupt or change files, steal data or cause disruption to services

malware that spreads between computers and interferes with their normal operation

malware that spreads through a network and uses resources to slow it down

malware that has been disguised as a harmless program

automated programs that perform tasks repeatedly

the protection of computer systems from threats

a system that filters network traffic to protect against unauthorised flows of data in or out of the network

a deliberate attempt to damage, disrupt or gain unauthorised access to computer systems, networks or data

malware that blocks access to a user's data until payment is made
