A speech is the communication of someone’s thoughts, through words, to an audience.

An opinion is a view or belief that a person has.

To justify an opinion means giving clear reasoning.

Reasoning is explaining why a person has a certain opinion.

Persuade means to convince or to make someone agree with you.

In 'Speeches’, the pupils learn to follow a structure when making an argument. In 'Introduction to Debate' pupils will build on this by using the same structure to orally make arguments in front of an audience. 

In 'Healthy Eating Adverts: Persuasive Writing’, the pupils learnt how to use persuasive techniques in their writing. In ’Speeches’, they will build on this by further exploring ways to verbally persuade an audience.’

In this unit, pupils learn why speeches are important and what makes a successful speech. They learn to use the PEPs structure to organise a speech and identify the purpose of speeches, exploring how they can provoke an emotional response. Pupils write their own speech and deliver it to an audience.

Speeches

Features are the parts or characteristics that make something unique.

Repetition means doing or saying something over and over again.

Rhetorical questions are questions that do not require an answer.

A structure is the way something is organised.

A point is an idea or reason to support your opinion.

An explanation means giving reasons to help someone understand an opinion.

Proof refers to the evidence used to support an opinion.

A summary will briefly recap the main parts of a speech.

Eye-contact is when a person is looking directly into someone else's eyes when speaking to them.

Pauses are temporary stops or breaks in something.

Volume refers to how loud or quiet something is.
