An ocean is a very big area of salt water between the continents.

Land is any part of Earth's surface that is not covered by water.

The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds Earth. It includes the oxygen we need to breathe, so it is essential for life on Earth.

A planet is a large round object that travels around a star in space.

A satellite is an object in space that orbits or circles around a bigger object in space. These an be natural like the moon or artificial ones like the International Space Station.

This unit builds basic knowledge needed to engage with the next unit 'Seasons' where pupils will need to talk about the world and some knowledge of its basic geometry.

This unit builds on pupils' knowledge of the world from their experiences in EYFS and their perceptions from other media and first hand experiences and expands their view of the local area as studied in 'Local area: Where do we go to school?' and 'Local area: Where do we live?' to a global scale.

This unit uses globes, maps and satellite images to explore the world’s continents, oceans, rivers and mountains. Pupils locate key features and landmarks and begin to understand the UK’s position in the wider world.

Continents and oceans: what can we find out about the world?

A two-dimensional (2D) object is flat - its dimensions are height (top to bottom) and width (side to side).

A three-dimensional (3D) object is solid - its dimensions are height (top to bottom), width (side to side) and depth (front to back).

A continent is a large land mass on Earth and there are seven: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania.

Earth is the name of the planet that we live on.

Life is the time between birth and death.

A tourist is someone who who travels to a different place from where they live for a holiday.

A river is a natural stream of water that flows through land and empties into a body of water such as a sea or lake.

The mouth of a river is where it enters the sea or a lake.

A mountain is a natural raised part of Earth’s surface that is higher than a hill.

Features are definable aspects of the landscape and may be natural or human-made.

A feature in the landscape which has a particular meaning attached to it, for example to help with directions, is called a landmark.

Something that is natural has not been changed by humans.

Something that is built has been made by humans.

The United Kingdom (UK) includes the countries of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

A country is an area of land that has its own government and can be large or small.

Europe is a continent in the Northern hemisphere.
