This unit provides a foundation for 'Europe: How diverse are its landscapes and places' and 'Europe: What is it like to live in northern Italy', which further extend pupils’ knowledge and understanding of distant places and how to investigate them at continental and regional scales.

This unit builds on 'The UK: What kind of place is is?' and 'Local area: Why is (our place) special', extending and deepening pupils’ place knowledge and understanding through the study of Jamaica and a specific small Jamaican locality. It develops geographical vocabulary and skills, enabling pupils to identify similarities and differences.

This unit explores what it is like to live in a contrasting locality by studying Jamaica and Tanzania. Pupils investigate location, climate, and key physical and human features, and compare each place with their own through maps, images and geographical vocabulary.

A geographer studies Earth's physical environments and human habitats.

The Equator is an imaginary line encircling Earth at 0° latitude and is an equal distance from the North Pole and the South Pole.

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a place.

Something that is natural has not been changed by humans.

An aerial photograph is a picture of an object or place that has been taken from above.

A satellite is an object in space that orbits or circles around a bigger object in space. These an be natural like the moon or artificial ones like the International Space Station.

Local means an area which the people who live there are familiar with, and encounter in their everyday lives.

A capital city is the place in a country where the government ‘sits’ and has its centre of power.

A digital map is a map that you view and use on a computer.

Settlements are places where groups of people live and work.

A crop is a plant that is grown in large quantities.

Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

A plantation is an area of land on which one kind of crop is grown, e.g. trees for wood.

A holiday is a planned break from work or school.

A tourist is someone who who travels to a different place from where they live for a holiday.

A destination is a place that someone or something travels or is sent to.
