This unit provides a foundation for Local area: How is it changing?', which involves a detailed case study of change in the school’s local area, and 'UK region: Why is the Lake District a National Park?', which investigates settlements, land use and change at a regional scale. 

This builds on 'Land use: how diverse are local and UK landscapes?', which focuses on land use locally and in the UK as a key aspect of human geography, extending and deepening pupils' understanding of human geography processes by investigating the characteristics of different types of settlement and the reasons why settlements are initially established and then change over time.

This unit explores different types of settlements, from villages to cities. Pupils learn about settlement features, growth and location, and use their local area to understand how places change. They apply what they’ve learned by designing a new settlement.

Settlements: where do people live and why?

Atlas maps show the location of places and features at global or national scale.

A symbol is used to show an important landmark, place, feature or area of a map, diagram or drawing.

A location is the particular position of something on Earth.

Distribution is how something is spread out across a geographic area.

Settlers are people who move with a group of others to live in a new location.

Natural resources are those that come from Earth without human influence and can be used for human needs.

A crossroads is the point at which two roads meet and cross each other.

A bridging point is the location on a river where it is possible to make a bridge to connect the two sides.

A site is the exact location of a place in relation to other nearby places or features.

Change is when something becomes different to how it was.

Development is when something changes, usually an improvement.

A comparison is the identification of similarities or differences between two or more things.

To annotate is to add text or notes that provide additional information on a map or image.

A market town has a regular public market.

A port is a place on a coast, river or lake where boats can stop to unload people or cargo.

The Industrial Revolution was a period of time where there was a large-scale change from making goods by hand to using machines.

Factories are large buildings where machines are used to manufacture goods.

Similarities and differences and the things that are the same or different when compared with another.

A design is a drawing or plan of something before it is made or built.

The future is a period of time that is yet to come.

Features are definable aspects of the landscape and may be natural or human-made.

To reflect is to think very carefully about something.
