This unit provides a foundation for 'Natural resources: What are they, where are they and why are they important?', also for 'Farms and factories: Where does our food come from?' on the origin of foodstuffs and 'Global trade: How do we get our stuff?' on international trade.

This unit builds directly on from 'The Americas: How diverse are its places and landscapes?', which focuses on the diverse people and landscapes of the Americas. This unit extends and deepens pupils’ understanding of physical and human geography and processes through a case study of the Amazon as a region of Brazil.

This unit explores the Amazon rainforest as a region in South America. Pupils learn about its location, climate and biodiversity, investigate how people live and work there, and consider the global importance of protecting tropical rainforests.

South America: why does the Amazon matter?

Tropical rainforests are areas of dense forest found close to the Equator where it is warm and there are high levels of rainfall.

A continent is a large land mass on Earth and there are seven: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania.

Temperate rainforests occur in parts of the world where the climate is mild and there are high levels of rainfall.

Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

Biodiversity means all the living things in an ecosystem or area.

Rainforest products come from the resources found in the rainforest and include food, medicines and furniture.

Trade is the buying and selling of goods and services between people, companies and countries.

Pollinate means depositing pollen on parts of a plant or flower to enable fertilisation to take place.

A life cycle is the series of stages that plants, animals and other livings things go through during their lifetime.

People who are part of the same ethnic group share the same nationality, cultures and traditions.

Settlements are places where groups of people live and work.

Colonists are people from one country who live in a different place that is controlled by their country.

A stakeholder is a person who has an interest in a given resource.

A debate is a formal discussion between two or more people in which they give their views for or against something.

Deforestation is the complete removal of trees.

Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere that traps heat.

The continuous movement of water on, above and below Earth's surface is known as the water cycle.
