This unit provides a foundation for moving on to 'Around the world in 80 days: What have we learned in primary geography?'.

This unit builds directly on 'Natural resources: What are they, where are they and why are they important?', extending and deepening pupils’ understanding of global interconnectedness by investigating how their everyday lives are linked to distant people and places through trade, technology and culture.

This unit explores global trade and how goods are produced, transported and consumed around the world. Pupils investigate imports, exports, supply chains and the role of ethical trading in shaping how we access everyday items.

Global trade: how do we get our stuff?

Goods and services that are imported are brought in from another country.

Goods and services that are exported are sold to another country.

Commodities are raw materials that are grown or dug out of the ground.

Data is a collection of information that can be analysed to help us answer a question.

A global company operates in many different countries.

A supply chain is all of the stages involved in producing goods, transporting them and selling them to customers.

Raw materials are things that can be grown or dug out of the ground and processed or used in the manufacture of goods.

Processing means making changes to a food’s natural state. An example is cooking beans in a tomato sauce and preserving them in tins.

Natural resources are those that come from Earth without human influence and can be used for human needs.

Transport is a way of travelling between places and methods of transport include cars, buses, trains, bicycles.

Working conditions are the physical and mental conditions that people experience in their jobs.

The place of origin is the place where something first comes from.

The costs and benefits are the bad things and good things about something.

Perishability is a measure of how quickly something (usually food) will go rotten.

Food miles measure the distance between where a food is grown or made to where it is eaten.

A carbon footprint is a measure of the total amount of greenhouse gases that are released as a result of our actions.

Responsibility is ownership of our own actions and choices.

A company is a business organisation that makes money from selling goods or services.

A government is the group of people who are in charge of running the country.
