This unit teaches pupils about fieldwork, an important assessment component at GCSE. Pupils will learn about the six stages of enquiry (formulating a question; collecting, presenting and analysing data; and writing conclusions and an evaluation). Pupils will also consider four field study options.

a metal pole (traditionally red and white striped) that is used to mark a point in a survey

a hand-held device used to measure the gradient of a slope

a square frame used at ground level to show the limits of a sample area

the physical size and shape of a river channel, including the sediment (bedload) it carries

a theory about how river processes change from source to mouth

strategies used to prevent a river over topping its banks following a period of intense rainfall

a score scale that uses both positive and negative values

a variable which indirectly suggests that another variable may be true

an angle measured clockwise from north 0° to 359°, used to orientate attribute symbols to show direction

a GIS tool which visualises changes in height above or below sea level along a transect line
