Pupils will use atlases, maps and globes to develop their locational knowledge of the world. Pupils will focus in on specific places to develop an awareness of how geographers examine place. OS maps and GIS will be used alongside fieldwork to build pupils' procedural knowledge.

Geography: what makes a geographer?

A continent is a large land mass on Earth and there are seven: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania.

An ocean is a very big area of salt water between the continents.

The scale on a map shows what size the area that is represented on the map really is.

Lines of latitude are imaginary lines on Earth showing position north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees.

A digital map is an electronic version of a map that can be used on a computer to see places, get directions, and find information about locations.

A GIS (geographic information system) is a computer system that captures, and displays geographic data to help understand spatial patterns.

A layer in a GIS is a set of data that you can look at on a map so that geographical patterns can be analysed.

An evaluation is a judgement on your fieldwork and the accuracy and reliability of your results.

Subjective data is data that is based on opinion rather than facts.
