In this unit pupils will use representations to describe and compare two fractions. They will  explain the relationship within families of equivalent fractions and use their knowledge of common equivalents to compare fractions with decimals. In the future unit pupils will explain how to write a fraction in its simplest form when solving addition and subtraction problems. 

In the prior unit pupils will find unit and non-unit fractions of whole numbers and explore parts and wholes. In this unit pupils will use representations to describe and compare two fractions. They will  explain the relationship within families of equivalent fractions and use their knowledge of common equivalents to compare fractions with decimals.

Comparing fractions using equivalence and decimals

Equal parts can be combined to make a whole.

The numerator is the top number in a fraction and shows how many equal parts we have.

The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction and shows how many equal parts the whole has been divided into.

Continuous means that every position on the line or scale has a value.

Equal means that something has exactly the same amount or value.

Equivalent fractions are fractions which have the same value, even though they may look different.

The proportion of a number, shape or group of objects is a part of the whole.
