In this unit pupils will find unit and non-unit fractions of whole numbers and explore parts and wholes. In the future unit pupils will use representations to describe and compare two fractions. They will  explain the relationship within families of equivalent fractions and use their knowledge of common equivalents to compare fractions with decimals.

In the prior unit pupils multiplied an improper fraction and a mixed number by a whole number. In this unit pupils will find unit and non-unit fractions of whole numbers and explore parts and wholes.

The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction.

The denominator is the bottom number of a fraction. It tells you how many equal parts the whole has been divided into.

The numerator is the top number of a fraction. It tells you how many parts we have, or are needed.

A non-unit fraction is a fraction that has a numerator greater than one.

Multiply a whole number by a proper fraction

Scaling is when something is transformed, through either shrinking or enlarging by a scale factor.

Repeated addition is when the same object or value is added to itself more than once.

The numerator is the number on the top of a fraction. It tells us how many parts we have/need.

The denominator is the number on the bottom of a fraction. It tells us how many parts the whole has been divided into.
