Religious education

In this unit pupils will begin their study of Christianity by examining some of the key beliefs of this worldview. They will focus on concepts of God, Trinity, Creation and the story and role of Jesus as incarnation and means of salvation.

Christianity: Beliefs and teachings

the third Person of the Trinity; believed to be present with believers since Pentecost and active on earth

the three persons of God: God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

the belief that God is one singular divine being (who can be manifest in the three Persons of the Trinity)

the first Person of the Trinity, the belief in God as creator and sustainer of the universe

the second Person of the Trinity; Jesus believed to be God incarnate

The Holy Trinity

bringing the world into existence; the belief that the world is God’s loving creation

God the Creator of the universe; a characteristic of God

referring to Jesus; based on teachings from John 1 describing God creating the world through his eternal Word

Christianity and creation

the first book of the Bible in the Old Testament; contains the creation accounts

referring to Christians who believe the Bible was written by human authors inspired by God and should be read in context

referring to Christians who view the Bible as the true and exact word of God

Interpretations of Christian creation

a first-century Jewish teacher; believed by Christians to be the Son of God

Jesus Christ: incarnation

the belief that Jesus’ death on the cross healed the rift between humans and God

to break a persons’ trust or confidence

the death of Jesus; a form of the death penalty used by the Ancient Romans

a follower of Jesus; commonly used to refer to the twelve chosen followers of Jesus during his lifetime

a deliverance from sin and punishment as a result of Jesus being crucified on the cross

Jesus Christ: crucifixion

going or being taken up; the event forty days after the resurrection when Jesus returned to glory in heaven

the belief that Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, conquering death

Jesus Christ: resurrection and ascension

the unconditional and generous love that God shows to people who do not deserve it

behaviour which is against God's laws and wishes/against Christian principles of morality

Sin and salvation

what follows the physical life on earth; life after death

relating to final things; death, judgement, and the final destiny of the soul or humankind

belief that after death Christians can enter a state of being with God for eternity

belief in a place of eternal suffering, or a state after death of being in separation from God

Eschatalogical beliefs, heaven and hell

at the end of time, each person will be judged by God and rewarded or punished

the belief that God will decide whether each person should receive eternal life or eternal punishment based on their earthly life

The afterlife: judgement

the ability to shape and change someone's thoughts, beliefs or actions

the belief that Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, conquering death; also refers to the form that many Christians believe the afterlife will take
