Description

In this unit, pupils learn to write atmospheric dystopian settings. They first review and deepen their understanding of sentence types, before looking at how to use figurative language and sophisticated punctuation to enhance their descriptions. They finally plan and write a dystopian setting.

This unit uses and builds on pupils' understanding of sentence structure, deliberate language choices and descriptive writing from 'A step into the unknown'. It gives pupils a deeper and more focused opportunity to extend and apply their understanding of descriptive writing to new contexts. This content prepares them for the writing elements of the Year 8 unit 'A monster within', where they continue to refine their language choices in descriptive writing by applying it to a different context with new semantic fields.
