Description

In this unit, pupils refine proficiency and flair as writers. Across fiction and non-fiction writing forms, they develop techniques that give them greater depth and flair in their writing. At the end of the unit, they write a narrative informed by emotion-led plot and detailed descriptions.

This is the final writing unit pupils complete in the Oak National Academy English curriculum, and it uses and builds on all of the knowledge and expertise they have developed in the previous 11 years. Now that pupils have developed their proficiency as writers across a range of forms, they focus solely on developing the flair and confidence required to make their writing compelling to all readers.

  1. Using language and tone to present opinions with flair
  2. Using perspective, tone, and punctuation to craft a clear voice
  3. Considering openings, cohesion, and endings to structure an effective argument
  4. Using single paragraph outlines to plan an effective argument
  5. Using nominalised verbs and adjectives to write effective arguments
  6. Using figurative language, precise verbs and perspective to write with flair
  7. Using shifts in focus and single paragraph outlines to plan descriptive writing
  8. Using language techniques and precise vocabulary to write excellent descriptions
  9. Using description and figurative language to enhance narrative writing
  10. Using emotion-led plot and detailed description to write an excellent narrative
