  • Modern literature strand 2: power, control and oppressive regimes

Description

In this unit, pupils read and explore 'The Lord of the Flies' by considering Golding's message about human nature. They first read the novel, before analysing the characters Ralph, Simon, Jack and Piggy. They then look at setting and symbolism before planning and writing an essay on human nature.

This unit builds on pupils' exploration of human nature and negative societal influences in 'A Monster Within'. In this unit, pupils look at a different societal context, and think more about how human nature interacts with circumstances. This prepares pupils for their first 'Modern text' study in Year 10. In particular, it prepares pupils for the 'Animal Farm' option and Orwell's exploration of the corrupting nature of power.
