Description

In this unit, pupils read and explore two nineteenth-century gothic poems by Edgar Allen Poe. They first read and analyse 'The Raven' and 'The Haunted Palace' in isolation, before comparing them to each other and developing a personal response. Finally, they practise performing one of the poems.

This unit uses and builds on pupils' new understanding of the Gothic from 'A Monster Within'. Having learnt about gothic fiction in 'A Monster Within', pupils now see how gothic themes can be expressed in poetry. This prepares pupils for the 'Malevolent characters' unit, where they will use their understanding of gothic fiction to write gothic stories.
