This unit builds on pupils’ understanding of how musical ideas are developed and structured by introducing more advanced compositional techniques. Using exemplar compositions, pupils explore how rhythm, texture, timbre and interaction between parts are used to create sophistication and clarity. This supports their GCSE composition work by developing more refined control over ensemble writing at a stage where pupils are expected to produce more detailed and stylistically secure outcomes.
