I can explain how a multiplication equation with 2 as a factor is related to doubling.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. If 2 is a factor, you can use doubles facts to solve the problem.
  2. 2 could represent the group size or the number of groups.
  3. Identify the group size and the number of groups in the multiplication story.

Keywords

  • Double / doubling - To become twice as many / to multiply by two.

Common misconception

Children may not grasp why 5 + 5 is equal to 2 × 5

Continue to use the stem sentences to help children understand doubling; 5 + 5 is the same as 2 groups of 5. This is the same as 2 × 5. Children can use a 2 times table chart to help them answer questions.

At this point, children know doubling as an additive structure. They will now be able to represent a doubles addition equation as a multiplication equation. Remind children that doubling is the same as multiplying by 2
