I can explain the relationship between adjacent multiples of 2
Lesson details
Key learning points
- Adjacent multiples of 2 have a difference of 2
- If you add 2 to a multiple of 2 you get the next multiple of 2
- If you subtract 2 from a multiple of 2 you get the previous multiple of 2
Keywords
Previous - Occurring before in time or order.
Next - Occurring after in time or order.
Common misconception
Pupils may find worded problems related to adjacent multiples challenging if they are not clear on the structure of finding previous and next multiples.
Model correct usage in a range of contexts including labelling abstract equations and using the term to identify the known elements in worded problems. Take time to show adjacent on number lines connecting to addition and subtraction of equal groups.
Provide pupils with plenty of practice of the two times tables over an extended period of time until children are fluent in the isolated multiplication facts. At this stage, they can recite the two times table up to the required number of twos in order to find the answers.
