Why this why now

Building on their learning of how they can make a positive difference in their communities this unit continues to develop pupils’ knowledge of social issues and the role citizens and organisations have in creating positive change. This knowledge helps pupils to understand how citizens can work together to improve communities and wider society and how they can make their voice heard by those in positions of power.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know they belong to various groups and communities, such as family and school.
  • Pupils recognise the role of voluntary, community and pressure groups.
  • Pupils know there are different kinds of responsibilities, rights and duties at home, at school and in the community, and that these can sometimes conflict with each other.
