What do we need to become active citizens in our community?

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain what financial skills we need to become active citizens in our community and how to report on an active citizenship campaign.

      Key learning points

      1. Successful campaigning depends on efficient financial skills, making sure funds are allocated sensibly to achieve aims.
      2. Three essential financial skills for campaigning include creating budgets, managing risks and reporting finances.
      3. The last step in the active citizenship process includes evaluating outcomes and reporting your campaign.
      4. Advocating and speaking about campaigning helps raise awareness and inspire action.

      Keywords

      • Active citizenship - the process of learning how to take part in democracy and use Citizenship knowledge, skills and understanding to work together and try to make a positive difference in the world

      • Campaign - an action or event organised by an individual or a group of people to achieve an aim

      Common misconception

It is not necessary for campaigners to have any financial skills.

Financial skills are really important in active citizenship campaigns. There are often budgets to stick to, risks to manage and financial reporting to complete.

      Teacher tip

This lesson is the second of a two part lesson but can also be used as a standalone lesson if required. You could provide pupils with some model speeches to listen to before their own. The active citizenship campaign can be acted out in your local community if you have suitable time and resources.
