Why this why now
This unit is the start of the Oak handwriting curriculum and the first step in pupils' development. The unit builds from pupils' first introductions to letters in the EYFS, comprehensively teaching the print formation of all 26 letters. Pupils gain and solidify foundational handwriting knowledge, such as how to develop control when holding a pencil. The development of accurate letter formation supports pupils with writing simple sentences in the Year 1 writing and grammar units. This unit prepares pupils for future units on capital letters and numerals, which will extend their understanding.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Know the difference between a capital letter and a lower case letter.
- The grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 26 letters of the alphabet.
- The ability to hold a pencil in a comfortable tripod grip.
- The ability to write recognisable print letters, most of which are correctly formed.
- Showing accuracy and care when drawing.
- Some knowledge of letter names.
- Demonstration of strength, balance and coordination.

Writing lower case letters in print
In this unit, pupils learn to sit comfortably and hold a pencil correctly. They learn handwriting patterns to help with letter formation and how to form all 26 lowercase letters in print. Finally, pupils practise forming letters in different letter families, for example ascenders and descenders.
