Why this why now

This unit builds on learning around narrative non-fiction, which was explored in the prior unit, 'The Pebble in my Pocket'. In this unit, pupils will broaden their knowledge of genre and read a historical fiction text set during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pupils will continue to develop their skills of retrieval, inference and summarising to gain deeper understanding of the context and themes. This unit prepares pupils for the future unit, 'Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover', where they will read and discuss another historical fiction text to deepen their understanding of the genre.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Ability to apply phonics knowledge to support decoding in multisyllabic words.
  • Ability to read common exception words by sight.
  • Know how to retrieve information from a text.
  • Know how to infer meaning from a text.
  • Know that authors make word and phrase choices.
