Key learning points
- A word family is a group of words common in feature, pattern or meaning. Prefixes and suffixes can build word families.
- A synonym is a word with the same or similar meaning to another word and an antonym has the opposite meaning.
- A pronoun is a word that we use in place of a noun to avoid repetition.
- A possessive pronoun is a type of pronoun that denotes possession of a noun by another noun.
- A preposition is a word that connects a sentence to a noun or noun phrase to show where/when/why something's happening.
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to identify prepositions within a sentence & distinguish them from determiners.
Prepositions always come before a noun or noun phrase to say when, where or why; they are distinct from determiners, which show specificity.
