  1. A word family is a group of words common in feature, pattern or meaning. Prefixes and suffixes can build word families.

  3. A pronoun is a word that we use in place of a noun to avoid repetition.
  4. A possessive pronoun is a type of pronoun that denotes possession of a noun by another noun.
  5. A preposition is a word that connects a sentence to a noun or noun phrase to show where/when/why something's happening.

Keywords

  • Word family - a group of words common in feature, pattern or meaning

  • Pronoun - a word that we use in place of a noun to avoid repetition

  • Possessive pronoun - a word that shows possession of a noun by another noun

  • Preposition - a word that connects a sentence to a noun or noun phrase to show where, when or why something is happening

  • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to identify prepositions within a sentence & distinguish them from determiners.

Prepositions always come before a noun or noun phrase to say when, where or why; they are distinct from determiners, which show specificity.
