Why this why now

This unit builds on pupil's previous knowledge of 'faire' in singular persons, expanding their knowledge to include English meanings other than 'do' or 'make'. They grow their verb lexicon with singular forms of highly frequent '-er' verbs. They learn the two English translations, 'I do' and 'I am doing' for the French present tense, a linguistic difference practised frequently in later units. Two-verb structures (introduced here with 'aimer' plus infinitive) are consolidated in later units, as are prepositions with two meanings (here à for 'at' and 'to').

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the pronouns je, tu, il and elle.
  • Pupils know the verb 'faire' can mean 'to do' or 'to make'.
  • Pupils can use the verb faire followed by the definite article.
  • Pupils know the definite articles le, la, les and l'.
  • Pupils can make statements into questions using intonation with and without question words.
