Villages, Towns and Cities

In this lesson we will be starting a new geography unit! We will be learning all about different settlement types, including villages, towns and cities. Today we will learn about the population of earth, and where people can be found around the world.

In this lesson we will be learning all about what a settlement is. We will learn about the key differences between villages, towns and cities, and how cities are growing in size and population.

In this lesson we will be learning all about the natural features of a place that might determine where people choose to settle. You will even have the chance to design your own ideal settlement!

Settlements come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In today's lesson we will be thinking about why settlements take the shapes that they do. This will involve taking a trip back in history to think about the first time that humans began to settle!

In this lesson, we will be learning all about cities. We will explore the different types of land use, including residential areas and industrial areas, as well as how cities grow and develop.

In this lesson we will be thinking all about the different experiences people have living in villages, towns and cities. How might life be similar? How might it be different?

In this lesson we will be exploring the difference between human and physical features of a settlement. You will get a chance to see Mr Hutchinson exploring his settlement to look for these features, then have the opportunity to investigate your own settlement!

In this lesson, you will learn all about maps. What are they, and why do we use them? You will have the chance to draw a map of your own local area.

In this lesson we will be learning about map symbols. You will have a chance to learn some common map symbols and then add them to your own map of your local area. You will then be able to draw a key to show people what each symbol means.

In this lesson you will learn all about directional language to help you to describe where things are in your local community. This will help you to give people directions so they can find where things are!
