      Threads

      Why this why now

This unit gives pupils the knowledge and tools to understand how our use of energy affects the planet. Its placement builds on earlier units about natural resources and the Amazon, encouraging pupils to connect energy production with environmental change. Pupils compare renewable and non-renewable sources, explore the causes and consequences of energy choices, and consider how individuals, communities and governments can respond to the energy challenge. This prepares them to think critically and constructively in the final sustainability-focused unit.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Knowledge of natural resources.
      • Some experience of using a wide range of resources to investigate geographical issues.
      • Some experience of thinking about creative solutions to social and economic problems.
