Why this why now
This unit gives pupils the opportunity to act as geographers through purposeful fieldwork. It builds on earlier mapping and local study units, and follows regional and European comparisons, encouraging pupils to apply their skills to real-world questions in a familiar context. Its placement near the end of the year supports reflection, allowing pupils to collect, present and evaluate evidence about local change. Through this, they develop confidence in fieldwork methods, geographical communication and decision-making.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Experience of fieldwork in the local area to investigate change in the locality.
- Some knowledge of how their local area has changed over time.
- Experience of learning about change and patterns of land use.
- Some knowledge of how this can impact on and be affected by the people who live and work and visit in a place.
