Why this why now

This unit develops pupils' understanding of the physical processes that create and change the Earth's geological structure. An understanding of geology allows pupils to make sense of the Earth's physical systems and how they impact the human environment. Pupils will use the knowledge gained in this unit in future units on tectonics and natural resources.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • The UK is made up of many different types of rocks.
  • Rocks are formed in different ways.
  • The UK’s weather is very variable.
  • Precipitation happens when air containing water vapour cools, condenses and forms clouds.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can give us information about differences across the world.

Rocks, weathering and soil: Why is geology important?

This unit teaches pupils about the physical processes that create and alter different types of rocks and soils over time. Pupils will also develop their understanding of how humans use different rocks and soils and why this can affect geographical patterns of wealth and population.
