      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explore odd and even numbers within 20.

      Key learning points

      1. Recall odd and even numbers to ten.
      2. A number is even if the ones digit is even.
      3. An even number can be made from groups of two.
      4. A number is odd if the ones digit is odd.
      5. An odd number cannot be made from groups of two.

      Keywords

      • Odd - Any number that cannot be made of pairs. The last digit is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9

      • Even - Any number that can be made of pairs. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8

      • Pair - Two together. Often with something in common.

      Common misconception

Children may think a number is an odd number if the tens digit is odd.

Reinforce the tens number being even by showing the groups of 2 We only need to look at the ones digit to see if a number is odd or even.

      Teacher tip

Give children experience of odd and even numbers in different contexts and using different representations. Look for patterns and similarities and differences.
