Explain how times table facts can help to find the quotient (5 times table)

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain how 5 times table facts can help to find the number of groups or the number in each group.

      Key learning points

      1. When we are dividing by 5, you can use the 5 times table to find the number of groups or the number in each group.
      2. 3 fives are equal to 15, so 15 divided into groups of 5 is equal to 3
      3. 3 fives are equal to 15, so 15 divided into 5 groups is equal to 3 in each group.

      Keywords

      • Divisor - The divisor is what we are dividing by.

      • Divide - To split into equal parts or groups.

      Common misconception

Children misunderstanding the difference between partitive and quotative division when discussing the problems.

Although they will result in the correct answers, the calculation itself will not accurately reflect the problem. Ensure children initially describe each problem and represent it visually so that they can see whether they are grouping or sharing.

      Teacher tip

As mentioned, have 5 times table charts available for children so that they can focus of identifying which facts they need to use, rather than being fully dependent on fluency or using larger numbers of counters at this early stage.
