Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Individual cm cubes can be used to measure objects.
  2. You can use a 10 cm strip to replace the first 10 cubes, and start your count from 10 to measure more efficiently.
  3. You can record results in different types of tables.

Keywords

  • Efficient - Working efficiently means finding a way to work quickly and maintain accuracy.

  • Record - To write something down so it can be shared with others.

  • Results - A set of measurements or information that has been gathered after measuring or observing something. An outcome.

  • Table - A way of sorting information made of rows and columns.

Common misconception

Some children may find it difficult to align the cubes with the ends of the objects, particularly when the object cannot be placed close to the cubes because it is curved or an irregular shape.

Use objects such as pencils and pens that can be placed close to the cubes, or support children with aligning the start of the object with the cubes by placing them both against a wall or a straight object such as a book.

When using images of centimetre cubes to measure length, the objects being measured should line up with the vertical edge of the face that is on the front of the cube in order to measure length accurately. Arrows have been included to indicate this throughout the lesson.
