Key learning points

  1. Ten groups of 10p is equal to £1 so 10p is one tenth of £1
  2. One hundred groups of 1p is equal to £1 so 1p is one hundredth of £1
  3. Ten groups of 1p is equal to 10p so 1p is one tenth of 10p
  4. Whole pounds are recorded using the £ sign and two decimal places £1.00

Common misconception

Pupils write 1£ because that is the order in which the expression is said.

Provide plenty of opportunities for pupils to see and use the correct notation as well as highlighting wrong examples.
