Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Informal calculation strategies such as rounding and compensating can be applied to calculating with money.
  2. Same sum generalisation can be applied to calculating with money.
  3. Column addition can be used to calculate with money but is not always the most efficient strategy.

Keywords

  • Addend - An addend is a number added to another.

  • Altogether - The word altogether is another way of saying total.

  • Regroup - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.

Common misconception

When using column addition with regrouping, pupils put the regrouped digits in the wrong order.

Part of the first lesson cycle includes an example of a pupil getting it wrong, as well as the correct way to show the calculation.

If pupils find adding multiple addends in column addition challenging, consider using number lines or other scaffolds to support them. Encourage pupils to state each time what they are adding together using place value language.
