Explain that 100,000 is composed of 50,000s, 25,000s and 20,000s

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

      I can explain that 100,000 is composed of 50,000s, 25,000s and 20,000s.

      Key learning points

      1. 100,000 is composed of two 50,000s
      2. 100,000 is composed of four 25,000s
      3. 100,000 is composed of five 20,000s

      Keywords

      • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by an integer (not by a fraction).

      • Gridlines - A gridline is a horizontal or vertical line that helps organise data on a graph or chart.

      Common misconception

Pupils misread the values of bars on each graph.

Encourage pupils to mark on as many gridlines that they can for themselves once they have recognised the size of the whole. This may then help pupils to estimate the value of each bar more accurately until they can do it by imagining the gridlines.

      Teacher tip

This lesson follows a very similar structure to the previous lesson. Once completed, you could link together the findings from both lessons, considering the relationship between common partitions of 10,000 and 100,000 as well.
