      Addition by bridging through 10

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can add two numbers by bridging through ten.

      Key learning points

      1. Partitioning addends supports bridging 10.
      2. Pairs to 10 can be used to add two or more addends.

      Keywords

      • Bridge - Bridging is a mental strategy which uses addition or subtraction to cross a number boundary.

      • Partition - Partition means splitting a number into parts.

      Common misconception

Pupils partition one of the addends incorrectly to help them bridge ten.

Pupils use number pairs that total ten to help them partition the addend. They consider what they have to add to make ten.

      Teacher tip

Tens frames and number lines can represent problems involving bridging ten. Once pupils understand how to bridge ten, they can apply the same strategy to bridging twenty, thirty and other tens numbers.
