Solving problems involving addition and subtraction

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can solve problems using addition and subtraction, including bridging through ten.

      Key learning points

      1. Different subtraction calculations need different strategies.
      2. Different addition calculations need different strategies.
      3. Number facts help solve addition and subtraction problems.

      Keywords

      • Minuend - The minuend is the number being subtracted from.

      • Subtrahend - A subtrahend is a number subtracted from another.

      • Difference - The difference is the result after subtracting one number from another.

      • Sum - The sum is the total when numbers are added together.

      • Partition - Partition means splitting a number into smaller parts.

      Common misconception

Difference can only be found by subtracting the subtrahend from the minuend.

Subtract the subtrahend from the minuend when they are far apart. When close together, find the difference counting up from the subtrahend.

      Teacher tip

Promote the use of trial and improvement with the pupils. This is an excellent mathematical strategy that encourages pupils to 'have a go', to try out numbers, make mistakes and learn from these.
