Why this why now

This is the first unit of the primary music curriculum and pupils will have very different musical starting points. In this unit, attention is drawn to the difference in our voices when we speak and sing. The chosen songs and chants are short and can be learnt quickly. With a narrow range of notes, pupils can listen carefully and begin to pitch match songs more accurately. The echo and call and response structures studied will be built upon in later 'Compose and Create' units.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils have experienced song, rhyme and pulse in their early years setting.
  • Teachers have established some classroom routines that would be beneficial to the unit, such as sitting in a circle, echoing and moving around the room.
  • Pupils can listen attentively and follow simple instructions when playing singing games.
  • Pupils have the confidence to try new activities and work with their peers.
  • Pupils can negotiate space safely and can move in time to the music.
