Why this why now

Pupils develop their knowledge of drum grooves, specifically the use of upbeats in the kick, the open hi-hat function and how to use the toms appropriately. Pupils learn about the role of the fill in highlighting the phrase end and start to develop their ability to improvise within a bar (or half bar) of a given groove. They develop their understanding of DAW capabilities and learn to quantise to 1/8, developing their understanding of semiquavers.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that drum grooves use three main parts of the drum kit - the kick & snare drum and the hi-hat
  • Pupils know the backbeat is an emphasis on beats 2 and 4 and is important in pop music
  • Pupils know that a phrase is often four bars and fills arrive at the end of it
  • Pupils understand the minimum DAW functions for adding instruments and editing recorded sound
