This unit is the first in a series of four swimming units. This initial swimming unit is ideal for beginner swimmers who have had no prior experience of swimming or water safely. This unit is taught in school, before any visits to the pool take place. Pupils will gain the confidence needed to attend the swimming pool for the first time. This unit is then followed by core aquatic skills and survival swimming, where pupils will develop their front and back paddle and streamlining. Pupils will further develop their understanding of health, active lifestyles when learning about aquatic fitness.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils can control their breathing when exercising on land.
- Pupils can move their bodies in different directions.
- Pupils can use a range of foundational movement skills to move at different speeds, on land.
- Pupils can describe the benefits of exercising.

The unit provides an initial introduction to swimming, focussing on water safety and pool rules through non-pool-based activities. This unit ensures pupils have a basic understanding of the skills they will need on their first swimming lesson including simple entry, exit and floatation skills.
