In this unit pupils will review their knowledge from the EYFS with counting to and from 10. They will compare and order numbers to 10 practically and will consider the role of zero to represent nothing. In the future unit pupils will  consolidate counting to 20 and back. They will secure their understanding of the teens numbers and their understanding of these numbers in an ordinal context

In prior learning, pupils will have learnt to count confidently and have developed a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers. A number word is the word we say for that number, so the number word for 2 is two.

When you take an object or objects from a set and count them you count them out.

To subitise means instantly recognizing the number of objects in a small group, without counting.

None means the same as nothing or not having changed something.

A numeral is a symbol or name that stands for a number.

A count or measurement that is an idea in our minds. The number is an idea, the numeral is how we write it.

Zero is the number that represents no amount or objects. When we add zero to a number, the result is just the number, unchanged.

To represent something is to show it in a different way.

Second is the position or object which comes after the first one.

Third is the position or object which comes after the second one.

Fourth is the position or object which comes after the third one.

Fifth is the position or object which comes after the fourth one.

The smallest number is the one that comes before all the others in the count.

The largest number is the one that comes after all the others in the count.

Less than means having a smaller value than another number or set.

More than means having a larger value than another number or set.

Fewer than means having a smaller number of objects in a set.

Equal means to have exactly the same amount or value.

When you compare you look for what is the same and what is different. It is good to know if one number is the same as, smaller than or bigger than another number.

One more than is when there is a greater amount by one or another item in the set.

When counting, the next number is the one that we say after a given number.

One less than is when there is a smaller value by one.

One fewer than is when there is a smaller quantity by one or one has been removed from the set.

When counting, the number before is the one that comes before a given number.

One less than is when there is a smaller amount by one or an item has been removed from the set.

We can order numbers from the smallest to the largest or from the largest to the smallest. The order stays the same when you count.
