This unit provides a foundation for 'Local area: Routes and maps', which focuses on investigating a specific land use - play areas. It lays the foundation for subsequent fieldwork investigations in the local area in 'Local area: how is (our place) special?', and a contrasting non-European locality.

This unit builds on 'Local area: Where do we go to school?', which focuses on the school site as a place, by extending the area of investigation into the local area. It develops basic geographical vocabulary and simple mapwork and fieldwork skills, focusing on human geographical features such as local buildings, land use and  journeys.

This unit investigates the area around school and home by identifying local features, exploring buildings, using simple maps, collecting data on how we travel to school, and describing familiar routes using basic geographical vocabulary.

Local area: where do we live?

The local area is the space immediately around where you are.

A village is a small group of houses where people live.

A town is a settlement that is usually larger than a village but smaller than a city and generally has local government.

A city is a settlement that is usually larger than a town and has local government.

Fieldwork is investigating the outdoors using geographical tools and thinking to gather information or data.

Familiar street features are those items that you usually find near to roads and pavements.

A street is a road, usually with houses or buildings on both sides.

A danger is a cause of something bad happening.

Buildings are structures made by people that have walls and a roof, such as homes, offices, schools, shops, places of worship.

A large-scale map shows a small area on a map in a great amount of detail.

A recording sheet is where you can note your findings from fieldwork, and can include a table, chart, etc.

A display is a way of sharing your findings and can be written, drawn, spoken or be a mixture of all these methods.

The journey to school is the method of transport used and the route taken to get to school.

A block graph is a graph made of coloured blocks or squares showing data that allows us to compare numbers in a clear and visual way.

Data is a collection of information that can be analysed to help us answer a question.

Transport is a way of travelling between places and methods of transport include cars, buses, trains, bicycles.

Choices are decisions made based on a range of options.

A route shows the starting point and end point of a journey, sometimes with stops in between.

A symbol is used to show an important landmark, place, feature or area of a map, diagram or drawing.

A detail is a particular piece of information about something.

A street map is a map of an area showing the locations and names of all the roads and some buildings.
