A fact is a statement about something that can be proven to be true.

An opinion is a thought, feeling or belief held by a person or group of people.

To summarise is to explain something using just the main points.

This unit links to further work on the UK in 'The UK: Who are we?'. 'UK region: Why is the Lake District a National Park?' and particularly to fieldwork in 'Local area: What needs changing?' where pupils will return to the theme of local change and consider what changes they would like to see in the future and gather a range of perspectives on this before making recommendations. 

This unit directly builds on work in 'Settlements: Where do people live and why?' to examine change in your local area through a large scale investigation, using mapwork and other evidence, including fieldwork.

This unit develops pupils’ fieldwork skills through an investigation of change in the local area. Pupils observe, measure, map and record evidence of change, gather local views, and begin to consider how places evolve over time.

Local area: how is it changing?

Historical maps show what an area was like in the past.

An annotation is text or notes added onto a map or image to provide additional information.

When something has developed it has changed from how it was in the past, usually for the better.

A census is the official collection of data about a whole population.

Enquiry questions set out what you want to find out in your geographical investigation.

To analyse is to study something in close detail.

An interview means talking to people to gather information.

A survey is a way of collecting information by asking a set of questions.

Fieldwork is investigating outdoors using geographical tools and thinking to  gather information or data.

An environmental assessment is an evaluation of the positive and negative qualities of the locality.

A risk assessment looks at what hazards we might come across and how to keep us safe.

A route shows the starting point and end point of a journey, sometimes with stops in between.

Data is a collection of facts or figures that can be analysed to provide information.

A graph is a diagram or picture that displays data.

To interpret is to decide on the meaning of something.

Spatial patterns show the links between where things are located.

A tally chart is a quick way of recording counting of data using lines in groups of five.

Something that is static does not move or change.

Fieldwork is investigating the outdoors using geographical tools and thinking to gather information or data.

Equipment is the set of tools or resources needed for a particular task or activity.
