This unit provides a foundation for 'The Americas: How diverse are its places and landscapes?' and 'South America: Why does the Amazon matter?', which further extend pupils’ knowledge and understanding of distant places and how to investigate them at continental and regional scales through an overview of the Americas and a case study of the Amazon region.

This builds directly on 'Europe: How diverse are its landscapes and places?', which focuses on the key geographical features of the continent of Europe, extending and deepening pupils' place knowledge and understanding through the study of Northern Italy as a distinctive European region. 

This unit explores northern Italy through its landscapes, transport, cities and villages. Pupils learn about everyday life and tourism in the region, and compare it with their own local area using maps, images and geographical vocabulary.

Europe: what is it like to live in northern Italy?

The scale on a map shows what size the area that is represented in the map really is.

The key on a map explains what the different symbols or colours used on the map mean.

A physical feature is natural and has not been formed or made by humans.

A human feature is something that humans have made or built.

Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

The weather of a place is the day to day condition of the atmosphere, e.g. sunny, snowing, warm etc.

Settlements are places where groups of people live and work.

The population is the total number of people living in a particular area.

Lines of latitude are imaginary lines on Earth showing position north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees.

To investigate something is to carefully study the facts and data to be able to find an answer or form a conclusion.

Locality describes a particular location, the features of each locality will differ.

World Heritage Sites are places on Earth that are of outstanding universal value to humanity and are listed to be protected for future generations to enjoy.

Sustainability is about taking care of the world we live in and keeping it safe for future generations.

A solution is a way of solving a problem.

Climate is the average weather conditions over a long period of time.

A settlement is a place where people live and often work.

Misconceptions are incorrect ideas or opinions that people have.

A stereotype is a set idea that people might have about a person, place or thing, but which is often not true in reality.
