A region is a part of a country or the world.

A county is an area within a country that runs services such as transport, education, policing, waste management, etc.

A map is a two-dimensional representation of an area, showing geographical features and where they are in relation to each other.

This unit enables pupils to challenge the single story and think about the complexity of people and place in the study of the Lake District and in Europe ('Europe: How diverse are its landscapes and places?'). 

This builds on pupils' knowledge of the UK in 'Land use: How diverse are local and UK landscapes?' and settlements in 'Settlements: Where do people live and why?' to look outwards and make connections with the diversity of the people of the UK and the wider world. 

This unit explores the UK’s regions, population and global links. Pupils learn about counties, migration and movement within and beyond the UK, and consider how the population is changing and what this means for the people and places that make up the UK today.

The UK: who are we?

This is a set idea that people might have about a person, place or thing, but which is often not true in reality.

Differences are the things that are not the same when compared with others.

The variety of human, physical or cultural characteristics in a geographical area is known as diversity.

Similarities are the things that are the same when compared with others.

Abroad means going to or being in a foreign country.

Emigration is leaving your country to live in another one.

Immigration means moving into a new country to live there.

Migration means moving from one place to another with the intention of staying there.

A census is the official collection of data about a whole population.

Data is a collection of information that can be analysed to help us answer a question.

Inhabitants are the people who live in a defined area.

The population is the total number of people living in a particular area.

Belonging is the feeling that you fit in in the group or place you are in.

Economic means things to do with the way money is made or spent.

Someone's quality of life is a measure of how happy, healthy and comfortable they are.

The character of a place means what it is like and how it feels to be there.

Multiculturalism is having people from many different places and cultures living in an area and and sharing their ways of life.

International means something that involves two or more countries.
