This unit provides a foundation for understanding, and making comparisons with, a region of Northern Italy, which also boasts mountains and lakes.

This unit builds on 'The UK: Who are we?' and 'Mountains and volcanoes: What, where and why?' to give pupils the contextual understanding to engage with this regional study of the Lake District, its landscape and its identity as a National Park.

This unit explores the Lake District as a UK National Park. Pupils learn about its landscape, weather and climate, how people live and work there, and the pressures on the environment caused by visitors and land use.

World Heritage Sites are places on Earth that are of outstanding universal value to humanity and are listed to be  protected for future generations to enjoy

A National Park is a large area of land protected by law to keep the natural environment safe.

A lake is a large area of water surrounded by land

A region is a part of a country or the world

A mountain is a natural raised part of Earth’s surface that is higher than a hill

Erosion is the process of Earth’s surface, e.g. rock or soil, being worn away and transported from its original site

Volcanic ash is made of small pieces of cooled lava and rock thrown into the air when a volcano erupts

Lava is molten rock that has broken through Earth’s surface. When it is still below the surface it is known as magma

The huge pieces that Earth’s crust is broken into are known as tectonic plates

Climate is the long term pattern of weather, usually taken over more than 30 years

The Gulf Stream is a strong, warm ocean current that travels across the Atlantic Ocean towards western Europe

Lines of latitude are Imaginary lines on Earth showing position north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees

A wind farm is an area in the countryside where a group of wind turbines has been placed to generate electricity

Hydro-electric power generates electricity by using water

Common land is land where people have shared rights for collective, communal grazing of livestock.

A tradition is something that has been done the same way for a long time

The economy is the way money in a particular area is made through production and trade and how money is spent

Tourism means people travelling to a different place from where they live for a holiday

Quarrying is digging things like rock or sand out of the ground for use

Climate change is a large-scale and long-term change in the planet’s climate, including weather patterns and average temperatures
