In this unit, pupils have increased their knowledge of volume which is used in the compound measures unit as the formula for density involves volume. 

In the prior unit, pupils built upon their learning of the area of different shapes. In this unit, pupils will continue to further develop their understanding of shapes by considering surface area and volume of pyramids, spheres and cones.

2D and 3D shape: surface area and volume (pyramids, spheres and cones)

Volume is the amount of space occupied by a closed 3D shape.

A prism is a polyhedron with a base that is a polygon and a parallel opposite face that is identical. The corresponding edges of the two polygons are joined by parallelograms.

The surface area is the total area of all the surfaces of a closed 3D shape. The surfaces include all faces and any curved surfaces.

A cylinder is a 3D shape with a base that is a circle and a parallel opposite face that is identical. A cross-section of a cylinder made parallel to the base will be congruent to the base.

A pyramid is a 3D shape that has a polygonal base and triangular faces that meet at an apex.

The apex is the point (vertex) which is the greatest perpendicular distance from the base.

When the apex lies directly above the centre of the base, then it is called a right pyramid.

An oblique pyramid is when the apex is not directly above the centre of the base.

A sphere is a 3D shape, where every point on its surface is equidistant from the centre.

A circular cone is a 3D shape that has a circular base and one curved surface that narrows from the base to a fixed point called the apex/vertex.

A line drawn through the apex and centre of the base of a right circular cone will be perpendicular to the base.

A solid is a shape that has three dimensions (e.g. width, height and depth).

A compound shape is a shape created using two or more basic shapes. A composite shape is an alternative for compound shape.

The volume is the amount of space occupied by a closed 3D shape.
