A digit is one of the symbols of a number system. In our number system we use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

An integer is any positive or negative whole number or zero. E.g. -2, 0, 153 are all examples of integers.

Problem solving with place value

This unit on place value allows pupils to develop the skills needed to estimate and round values. By understanding the value of each digit, pupils can determine what other values are close to the original value. It continues the exploration of the infinite nature of sets of numbers.

This unit looked at the composition of numbers containing up to 7 digits and how to read these numbers 

In this unit pupils revisit, secure and develop their understanding of place value with integers, decimals, fractions, metric and imperial units. This knowledge is then extended to order and compare numbers of increasing complexity.

Place value

When a number is multiplied by itself multiple times, it can be written more simply in exponential form.

A number is in fractional form when it is displayed as one integer divided by another integer.

A number is in decimal form when the decimal point is shown and there are digits to the right of the decimal point.

Metric units are based around the standard units of metre, gram and litre.

A prefix is a group of letters attached to the front of a root (word) to make a new word, for example tricycle.

Milli placed before a unit means (1/1000)

Kilo placed before a unit means 1000 times.

Imperial is a system of units for measuring, which was created in the early 1800s during the British Empire.

An inequality is used to show that one number or measurement is not equal to another.
