Why this why now

This unit builds on pupils' exploration of human nature and negative societal influences in 'A Monster Within'. In this unit, pupils look at a different societal context, and think more about how human nature interacts with circumstances. This prepares pupils for their first 'Modern text' study in Year 10. In particular, it prepares pupils for the 'Animal Farm' option and Orwell's exploration of the corrupting nature of power.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils have read the novel
  • Pupils understand the plot of the novel and can recall information about its central characters
  • Pupils can select quotations to support a point
  • Pupils understand how context can inform our understanding of a text
  • Pupils can identify and explain the purpose of an extended metaphor
  • Pupils can engage in close analysis of a short piece of text and annotate it
  • Pupils understand that a writer can use a range of structural techniques, such as foreshadowing and comment on these

'Lord of the Flies'

In this unit, pupils read and explore 'The Lord of the Flies' by considering Golding's message about human nature. They first read the novel, before analysing the characters Ralph, Simon, Jack and Piggy. They then look at setting and symbolism before planning and writing an essay on human nature.
